Superman Could Save Us If He Were Real

Last time we posited that Superman could save us if he were real. Of course, it's not possible. (Yes, kids, unfortunately the Man of Steel really doesn't exist, despite the current avalanche of movies about him, including one absurdity about some sort of Super-girl.

Facing this stark reality, though, we might wonder about Divine Intervention? Are things at the point where only that will save us?

As opposed to Superman, Divine Intervention isn't an imaginative fiction. For those of us who believe in God, it's not to be dismissed. The thing is, though, we can't just sit back and wait. If there's something we can do, let's do it!

But what might that be?

We'll not pretend to know how to solve the problems brought up last time, along with the others that continue to grow around us. But maybe there are indeed some things we can and should do in the face of what does seem to be spinning out of control.

But first, let's acknowledge that there's a conundrum here. If everything is really in a disordered state, why are things seemingly going well - and not just according to the prevailing narrative?

After all, the stock market keeps bouncing along merrily. The latest manifestation is its bounce-back from the big sell off after the Fed held rates steady.

Then there's the employment market, which has been robust - at least according to the statistics the government lobs at us each month.

And then there's real estate - specifically the housing market. Sure, some areas of the country are being pummeled; but if you live in one of the major metro areas of some big cities, prices keep not simply holding steady, but are even rising.

We have not simple answer to this. If you believe all is well, then take that to the bank, so to speak.

But if you do think things are awry, it would behoove you to take some remedial action in response.

The big item here is: Prepare.

Yes, there's nothing unique in this suggestion. Squirreling away sufficient food, some cash, and - depending on your location and circumstances - perhaps water, a means of defending hearth and home, etc. have been proposed by here and certainly many other places.

We might summarize this into the broad categories of: material, emotional, spiritual.

With this, we note that the material is typically urged upon us. But do not neglect the emotional and the spiritual.

If there's a real need to be materially prepared, the emotional should follow naturally. How we do this will be specific to each individual and family. But thinking of what may impact us if things go severely south goes a long way to managing the stress that would surely come with such a situation. You don't want to be caught emotionally off guard. Deep anxiety has a way of clouding judgment and could very well undermine your material preparations. So if you haven't emotionally prepared, carve out time to gather your thoughts and get strong.

Spiritual may seem more remote. But it can on the other hand serve as the foundation of the material and emotional prep.

As a Catholic, if we're properly taught, we know that being prepared for death (unpleasant as this can seem to many of us) should be part and parcel of daily life. Since we're close to the need to finish up today's thoughts, just know that my personal experience - especially in the last six months - has always caused me to be grateful to God that He has given me the grace to take spiritual preparation seriously, and to continue to pursue it daily.

With that we sign off after yet another week of things seeming just fine and dandy to some of us, and - to say the least - not so much to others. But even if you think all is well, it can't hurt to prepare.

After all, sadly, Superman is just a fictional character, right?
