Chrysler: Fix it again Tony

Chrysler filed for bankruptcy protection. It now gets to "reorganize" itself without having to pay its creditors on time. Essentially it gets some breathing room as it sorts through various ways to stay in business. It's not planning to go out of business.

Part of its strategy is to combine operations with Italian car maker Fiat. According to the government, Fiat brings cutting edge, environmentally friendly engineering technology to the table, along with the cash Chrysler needs to survive.

I admit it sounds a bit surprising to me. Growing up, Fiat's were known for absolute un-reliability. F-I-A-T stood for "Fix it again, Tony." You bought a Fiat because you liked the way it looked. No one questioned Italian design prowess. But engineering?

Of course, it's possible the government's assessment is correct. I just don't know. What I do know is that since Chrysler accepted bail-out money, the government's held sway over it's future. Even the President has made statements regarding how Chrysler will operate and succeed in the future.

It's all being passed off in a kind of off-hand manner. No big deal. Chrysler will emerge a lean, efficient company. All will be well.

Hmm...
