Over the Weekend In Case You Missed It

Rather than go on about how the recent stock market rally makes little sense given what's going on in the world economy, and increasingly in the U.S. economy (yes, there are problematic signs despite what you read and hear), a really important event occurred over the weekend. It won't change the world, and for some may not even move a hair on their heads. But for us who have enjoyed and still enjoy the Golden Age of Hollywood, one of the greats passed away, as reported this weekend:
Maureen O’Hara, the fiery Irish-born actress who starred with John Wayne in “The Quiet Man,” John Ford’s film about an American ex-boxer’s unquiet retirement to his village birthplace in Ireland, has died. She was 95.
Not only was she a heck of an actor, but she was a real eyeful. You'll find comments that she really lit up the screen in technicolor, but whether you see her in black and white or color, she was what it seems too many of us fail to recognize these days as a distinct gender: a woman. In fact, can you imagine Maureen O'Hara announcing she was going to change her sex (as if that's even really possible)? Ironically, though, John Wayne, with whom she starred in some of her best movies, had this to say about her:
“I’ve had many friends, and I prefer the company of men, except for Maureen O’Hara; she’s a great guy.”
Yeah, a great guy captures a lot of her on-screen (and apparently off-screen) personality. What a great combination, isn't it? Those looks and that personality?

Anyway, we'll let the markets speak for themselves this week, and remember one of Hollywood's greats with appreciation and affection.
