Merry First Day of Christmas!
Set aside all cares. It's Christmas Day. Better still, it's the First Day of Christmas!
You remember that old song, "The Twelve Days of Christmas," don't you? Well, it's based on the reality that the heart of the Christmas Season isn't penned in like a herd of cattle on December 25th.
The tradition of celebrating Christmas for twelve days has been largely forgotten by so many, if not most, of us. We build up to a fever pitch starting before Thanksgiving such that by the end of the 25th, Christmas quickly fades. So many of us experience a kind of let-down feeling. If it's wasn't for New Year's Day coming up, heck, some of us would be downright depressed!
But how about we don't let that happen this year. How about we keep Christmas going for the whole twelve days. Wouldn't that be marvelous? Everyone continuing to greet us with a smile and a "Merry Christmas" day to day: People walking with that little skip in their steps that marks the Christmas Season: It's all for the better if that were to happen.
So even if it's not the way of the world these days, maybe some of us can pick up the torch and carry Christmas for these twelve days. Just a suggestion. Maybe this traditional French Christmas Carol will help help us find that torch and keep our spirits soaring...
