Hoping For the End of The Pandemic or Hoping That Easter Saves Your Soul?
Hope springs eternal - or so the saying goes. I'm not so sure it makes a lot of sense. There are plenty of despondent, despairing people wandering around these days seemingly without hope.
It's quite sad, sometimes disturbing, to encounter such people. Some are homeless, some addicted to drugs, others emotionally unbalanced. We even read of people driven to despair by the isolation imposed on them by our C-Virus Mess.
Desperate or not, most, if not all, of us have been hoping for the end of the Pandemic. Indeed, hope has sprung up from the distribution of an experimental drug alternately named vaccine, shot, or - the latest - jab. The theory has been put forth that the more of us get stuck with this thing, the more hope we should all have that things will return to - what's that word again? - ah, yes, normal.
Maybe.
But, as we noted last time, stuff was already percolating before anyone ever heard of the Wuhan Virus. Bad stuff. The economy was questionable. Markets were wobbly. Social unrest and unchecked violence rocked many of our towns and cities. Our country seemed to be splitting into two camps. Will that be the "normal" to which we return?
For those of us whose hope centers on being stuck and getting your neighbor to do likewise, we wish you luck. Others of us, though, do have a source of hope that indeed springs eternal. It will be celebrated tomorrow. It's called Easter.
Whether or not the Pandemic ends any time soon won't minimize that hope. Our hope springs not from being stuck. Our hope springs in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Sure, the end of the Pandemic would be a good thing. But we can always find ourselves facing another pandemic - or some other disaster or personal tragedy. The hope of the Resurrection, though, remains steadfast for those with the grace of faith and an understanding of what the Resurrection accomplished for all of us.
If you don't know what that is, consider finding out. If you do, you'll see that no matter how the coming weeks and months unfold, hope will spring eternal.
Happy Easter!
