HFT: I don't Know What To Make of This!
HFT - high frequency trading - now accounts for more than half the trading volume on the exchanges. These are programs constructed by math experts and they now dominate trading in markets.
This video captures 1/2 second - yes, one half of a second - of HFT. The first half of the half second looks like a nuclear exchange between multiple sources - wild, violent, frightening. The second half looks like the aftermath of such an exchange - the calm after the storm. Oh, and this little half-second snippet represents trading in boring old Johnson and Johnson. Frankly, I don't know what to make of it. The comments that follow the video range from, Yeah, this makes sense," to "It's the end of the world."
