Government Heads for Shutdown - of Course!

So today's headlines tell us a shutdown of the government is coming. You're surprised?

Think about it: how can politicians let this chance slip by - the chance to pompously grandstand in front of us. Democrats and Republicans publicly jousting, pointing fingers, warning and wailing about what's going to happen if the federal government doesn't get its fix (more money, ever more money) this week.

Will they not come to an agreement on time? Does it really matter. Sure, some will be inconvenienced if there's a temporary shut-down. Maybe a few a bit more than inconvenienced. But does anyone believe Armageddon is upon us if the federal government takes a snooze for a few days? And does anyone really believe a shutdown will continue for any significant amount of time? Really?

But the media's got its hot story now and it won't let go either. It's in on the action. Other news may slip through the cracks, but we'll be curtly jerked back into the "debate" over government funding over and over until the story loses its appeal.

Question: Why do you pay attention to all this? If not you, then someone must be, otherwise the media would give up and search out another hot story - maybe get back to Syria, or the Iranian "nuclear" story - until they find something to grab you and hold on to you. So, again why do you pay attention?

How about we just go about our business and ignore the whole thing? I, for one, have plenty of work to do today. In fact I hardly have much time to spend on the "news" under normal circumstances. Having learned to dole out a few precious moments so that I'm not oblivious to what's going on around me, there's no good reason to increase that allotment over the chance that Washington will shutter its windows and lock its doors (figuratively of course) for a few days.

Anyway, the choice is yours. Let them pull you down and drag you through their mud, or walk tall and go about your business.

Oh, there's one thing you may want to keep in mind - something we posted a few days ago:

The issue we should all be howling about isn't that they might default, but that the government can't function without the ability to run up even more debt.

Now there's something to spend a moment or two contemplating. But, of course, it's a subject that won't attract any attention this week as our political drama queens play to the crowd and milk the debt ceiling for all its worth.

And now...it's back to work. It's Monday, the beginning of a new week. Lots to do.
