Happy Memorial Day!
We begin the Memorial Day weekend today. Yep, it's come that soon this year.
Remember, in its wisdom, the government declared that a national holiday of Memorial Day "Observed" shall fall on the last Monday of the month of May. And so this year, since the last day of the month, May 31st, will be a Sunday, we find ourselves observing Memorial Day on the 25th, even though the actual, or "real," Memorial Day originally fell on May 30th. Why May 30th? Apparently, "the May 30 date was chosen as the optimal date for flowers to be in bloom."
What's so important about flowers? Well, remember this isn't really a day for barbecues, or the "first day of summer" as some would call it these days. It's a day to remember those who died in war defending our nation from its enemies. And we traditionally place flowers on graves.
So take a moment to remember our war dead. You're likely going to enjoy some respite from the daily grind of work, perhaps get together with family and friends. Most of us, despite the difficult economy, will find a few shekels to enjoy some sort good eats and drink. But whatever you do, do so with gratitude. Gratitude for the liberty we still share - or what remains of it - as a result of the sacrifice of those who died defending our great country. Gratitude also for the presence of our loved ones and those whose company we enjoy.
