Google's Bombshell and The Way Things Really Work - Maybe

Google announced a game-changing tech bombshell. At least that's the claim.
What Google just announced at its IO conference is a bombshell for the future of the company. For years the search giant has witnessed the chipping away of its core product — search — due to the rise of mobile applications and their siloed-off experiences. Users are engaging more and more with programs that have no attachment or often need for search on the broad web, and as a result Google's position as the owner of our habits, interests, and needs on the internet has looked increasingly at risk.
Today, Google might have just changed its trajectory.
Always fascinated by the mystery of technology (mystery at least to us non-nerds), this article did catch my attention. In fact, I think I might have even understood what the heck this purported revolution is all about. And if I got it (I think), just about anyone should be able to as well. Now that we all know our lap top, tablet, cell phone, search, and app experiences will likely profoundly change in the coming months and years, let's not overlook the lesson we might learn from this. As regular readers will know, we do offer up lessons from time to time when covering the latest happenings, especially those which wield a heavier hammer in their real or potential impact. It's one way to force ourselves out of the reactionary mode that the flood of information can cause when we allow our brains to soak up the plethora of visual and aural inputs that can overwhelm our thinking - if we let it.

Here we pause after the initial "Ooh-ahh" for a trickle of reason which can stem that never-ending flood of information for a moment or two and help us learn something beyond the specific message we've just encountered. We're not trivializing the apparent wonder of this new technology. But we're simply placing it into a wider context to reveal what may have been a missed if we did not stop and think.

These sorts of advances in technology, while they typically signal some sort of progress, also come with, let's call them, side-effects. For example, as our computing and searching experience becomes more seamless, we expose ourselves to increased hacking. These incursions are facilitated by all those connections between devices, software, apps, etc., that make our lives easier.

The point here is before you "break out the hats and hooters"* and set off the fireworks, let's see what the other side of the coin looks like. Not that we're throwing cold water on this baby. We're just using our reason and common sense to avoid unreserved judgment. On balance, we may all benefit and rejoice. Just don't be surprised if and when the other shoe drops.
