The "Whatever" Jenner Thing

The Bruce/Caitlyn/Whatever Jenner thing - one hopes - will soon die down and we'll be rid of the guy/gal who once won the Olympic Decathlon, an accomplishment that once marked this sad individual as the "world's greatest athlete."

Ah yes, I remember it well. Jenner was magnificent in destroying his competition. He appeared on a box of Wheaties, as was the custom at that time. As the year's rolled by, he faded from the public's eye, until recently when he popped up from time to time looking like a shadow of his young self. It wasn't that he was older, but he'd had plastic surgery and really looked a sad sort of leftover of the great athlete he was once - until his latest publicity splash that culminated in that bizarre magazine cover that I prefer not talking about.

But all of that person- whatever - Jenner's antics could not compete with the seemingly endless line-up of media folks tripping over each other to not just express sympathy with the supposed plight of Jenner living his life as a man while secretly (somehow) really being a woman, but also making out that Jenner provided some sort of inspiring example not only to those with similar afflictions, but to families everywhere. Yes, folks, families should revel in this. It shows - what does it show again, oh, right - it shows that decent families accept, support, embrace - whatever - any sort of behavior, proclivity, even disorder that a given familiar member displays whether privately or publicly.

Did I say "disorder"? How dare I! Whatever it is that Jenner has, displays, and promotes must be positively framed. We must, after all, be tolerant of - whatever.

But what's this? It seems there's some dissension in the professional ranks in the person of the former chief of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins.
Not only does Dr. Paul R. McHugh consider changing sexes “biologically impossible,” he thinks being what is popularly called “transgender” these days is actually a “mental disorder.”
Now it's how dare he! The pressures off me. After all, I was simply applying my common sense, and we all know that's no way to evaluate the Jenner thing. But this guy's the real deal. And he pulls no punches:
“This intensely felt sense of being transgendered constitutes a mental disorder in two respects. The first is that the idea of sex misalignment is simply mistaken – it does not correspond with physical reality,” McHugh wrote. “The second is that it can lead to grim psychological outcomes.”

While sometimes it's good to be alone, and while sometimes it's important to say what you really think, even if you're alone in saying it, in this case it's also good to find that one is not the only person in this great world who doesn't buy the Jenner thing hook, line, and sinker; further, who thinks that all these media people tripping over each other are totally full of...you know what.

If anything, the Jenner thing is yet another manifestation that the world keeps getting not just more irrational, but downright crazy. And there must be more of you out there who agree. I hope.
