Clapper's Claptrap: Revelation of Phone Taps Damages National Security

Intelligence chief James Clapper thinks the revelation of phone taps damages national security - no, wait irreparably damages national security:
Disclosure of the massive surveillance of phone records and internet communications risks “long-lasting and irreversible harm” to US national security, the director of national intelligence says.
Right off the bat, let's clear the air here. There's simply no way that this revelation would damage national security. Unless I'm sorely mistaken, lots of Americans probably already assumed "they" (fill in your favorite bogey man) were snooping on our lives in ways we don't see or aren't aware of. Besides, can you imagine real terrorists changing their behavior because of this revelation. Right. Before this, they'd just pick up the phone and all each other and chat about their next plot, never ever expecting that anyone might ever be monitoring their whereabouts or their conversations. Right.

As for Clapper's comment here, either he thinks we are all morons who will turn on whoever leaked this information to the UK's "The Guardian" or he really believes what he's saying. Let's take a quick look at both possibilities.

We're All Morons

There are two reasons Clapper might believe this.

One, so many of us actually do behave so often and so consistently like morons, it's perfectly natural that he should simply assume all of us are, or at least enough of us are, and so he can make a ridiculous statement like this and not expect us to either be offended or laugh hysterically at the idiocy of it, or,

Two, he so "elited" (I made up the word; it means something like ensconced as a member of the elites) that he believes he can do or say anything he pleases and it will be accepted by us lowly common people.

Note these are really two sides of the same coin. In either case, we're too dumb to possibly see how ridiculous his claim really is. But in the first, we emphasize how dumb we are; in the second, the emphasis is on how superior and above us he is. I know, it's subtle, but I think valid.

He Really Believes His Own Claptrap

If Clapper really believes this revelation undermines U.S. security, heaven help us. In this case - that is Clapper believing his own claptrap there's not much intelligence going on at our intelligence agencies. How could they possibly think that this revelation would come as a surprise to terrorists, or give them any insight into their activities? Heck, when you plan a surprise party for someone, you're careful about what you say on the phone, thinking someone might overhear what you're saying. One consolation here is that if they're that clueless, maybe they won't be able to use all that information in any effective way to undermine our civil liberties. But I wouldn't count on that.

Hey, I just realized that "Clapper" rhymes with "tapper."
