Global Warming Back in the Spotlight
People believe that global warming is real, according to an article in Slate. Apparently people became skeptical for a while, but now that we had a hot summer along with some extreme weather around the country, more people think global warming is something to be concerned about.
But wait. While global warming might be real, the issue that's controversial is whether humans cause it. And while people are back to believing in global warming, they're not necessarily accepting the thesis that it's caused by humans.
If you decide to read the whole article (Click HERE), you'll see how reason plays virtually no role in the author's thinking. He's just concerned about polls - what people think. There's almost no concern with facts.
But why should you or I care about what people think. Shouldn't we be concerned with the facts? Shouldn't we be concerned with reality? Shouldn't we focus on three things here: 1) Is the world's climate getting warmer? 2) What are the consequences if it is, i.e., how might it affect us? 3) Do people cause it, or is it simply a natural phenomenon that has nothing to do with human action?
The thing is, most global warming "believers" I run across don't care about facts. They blame humans for global warming, and they insist that global warming will cause global disaster unless humans stop causing global warming. From this, they create an agenda that calls for government control of human activity that supposedly causes global warming.
But if global warming isn't caused by human activity, then more government control won't accomplish anything positive. All it will do is increase the power of government. It will increase government's interference in the economy and in our lives in general.
So rather than take sides in this issue, try to focus on facts. Look for the facts so you'll know whether human activity really causes global warming. And if you do find out that human activity causes global warming, then think about whether increased government control is the best way to address the problem.
Forget polls. This isn't about taking sides. Don't let people who push agendas sway your thinking - and that goes for those on the left and those on the right. Just focus on the facts.
Learn to use your reason. Learn to think clearly. Otherwise, just ignore the whole issue. If you don't know the facts and aren't concerned about what's really going on, who cares what you think?
