Baby Cured of Aids: The Real Story

Remember the baby who was "cured" of Aids? Big news a few weeks ago, wasn't it? Well, it's really a case of media slanting the news. In case you actually believed the reporting on this story, an researcher working on a cure for Aids reports this:
Was the baby infected with HIV and, thus, cured?

To many of the researchers at the conference, the answer is "no." It seems more likely that her treatment prevented her, after exposure to HIV, from being infected.
See the difference in the way the story was reported and the reality of what actually occurred? Do yourself a favor and treat what you read with a high degree of skepticism, if you don't want to spend the time it takes to verify whether what you read is really true, OK?

And the thing to remember here is not only were you possibly deceived by the reporting, but there were consequences that most of us are completely unaware of:
Those of us in the field of HIV care and research remain steadfast in working toward a cure, a vaccine, better-tolerated therapies, and better access to care and reproductive-health services for those infected and at risk. Now we will also be accountable for explaining the relevance of the "baby cured" news to HIV-infected individuals, likely with a careful attention to the words we choose.
