"This is America. Our doors are open."

Representative John Lewis of Georgia, referring to the avalanche of illegal immigrants cascading across the southern border of the U.S. stated:
"This is America. Our doors are open."
What could this possibly mean? Over the course of its history, the United States has more often than not carefully controlled its borders, just as any nation-state does. Interestingly, despite the fact that this latest illegal incursion has become yet another political football to be passed and kicked from Democrat to Republican and back again, the actual numbers of illegals don't hold a candle to the waves of immigration that brought both sets of my grandparents to the U.S. When they arrived, our country managed to absorb as many as 1 million immigrants per year, far more than the people to which Lewis refers.
At least 57,000 illegal immigrants have crossed the border since October of last year, and federal officials expect at least 150,000 more to do so next year. Obama has requested $3.7 billion in emergency funds from Congress to deal with border crisis.
The point isn't whether our doors are open or not. It is simply that, as opposed to the million per year that entered our country during the great immigration waves of the late 19th - early 20th century, these people are coming in illegally.

I wonder what my grandparents would think of this were they alive today. They sacrificed and suffered to come here and were not given any welfare assistance. It took some doing to get in legally. They did what they had to do.

Is there some reason these illegals can't do the same?

As for Lewis comment, his words are simply politically drivel. You shouldn't let yourself be influenced one way or the other by them. Just ignore him. His words betray either a gross lack of understanding and intelligence, or they are simply manipulative, crafted by a politician looking to influence the ignorant and easily swayed masses. Don't be one of those ignorant masses.
