Ugly Chinese

The "Ugly Chinese" may replace the "Ugly American." Though you don't hear it much these days, the "Ugly American" was a phrase popularized in the 1950s and 1960s as America's power expanded in the so-called "Free World." It expressed a resentment of a certain attitude some felt Americans had toward the countries in which they extended their political and commercial influence. So, as the Chinese expand their political and commercial influence, we shouldn't be surprised that resentment builds towards them:

"The sense of unhappiness with China among ordinary people in some countries has been getting more acute by the day," wrote Guo Jiguang, an expert on Southeast Asian politics at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, in a recent report on China's regional security environment. "They feel unhappy at the role China is playing in their country. If we ignore local people's views, in the long term we will pay a big price."
