Another Step Forward for Donald Trump's Campaign

The media is awash with stories about what an awful fellow is Donald Trump. It's the latest feeding frenzy for those who manufacture issues in order to gain readership and listener-ship. While some want to drive "The Donald" from the presidential campaign, a more likely outcome of all this brouhaha would be this: As soon as the public loses interest in Trump bashing, the stories will cease - with Trump possibly, perhaps likely, still in the race.

Indeed, one media story that caught my eye tells me that Mr. Trump may yet get his shot at the brass ring. Apparently Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, and Mitt Romney (yes, he's still getting his two cents in) want us all to know they don't approve of Trump's pontifications about immigrants. Just the idea that these "main stream" Republicans disapprove of Mr. Trump's candidacy may prove a boon to the beleaguered candidate. After all, it should be no surprise that there exists a disaffected minority of Americans who have lost confidence in the mainstream major parties, both Democrat and Republican. Will Trump attract their attention and devotion? Perhaps Mitt Romney's statement provides a hint of things to come:
“Yes, I think he made a severe error in saying what he did about Mexican-Americans,” Romney replied. “And it’s unfortunate.”
"An error," says Mr. Romney. There's not even the attempt to characterize Trump's comments about immigrants as true or false, right or wrong. His statement captures the complete disinterest in matters related to truth or ethics by the major parties. It's all about getting elected, truth and morality be damned

Of course, I would be the last person to put forth the claim that Trump represents a turn to a better path for our country. In any case, those who promote Trump as a better alternative may ultimately trump those who would portray him as persona non grata, if not the devil himself. The more the mainstream Republicans, and their Democrat counterparts claim a moral high ground over Donald Trump, the more attractive a candidate he may turn out to be for those Americans who've lost all faith in the establishment.

Look, you may not believe that every Mexican who stumbles across our southern border is a rapist. You may understand that not every illegal immigrant deals drugs and commits violent crime. But if you're concerned that at least some percentage do indeed represent the seedier segment of the Mexican population, and that our government has abandoned its responsibility to protect our borders from such unsavory characters, who will your candidate likely be? Maybe Trump?
